About

Telstra is a leading telecommunications and technology company offering a wide range of services globally, with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region.

Telstra’s heritage is proudly Australian, but we have a longstanding international business. Today, we have around 3,000 employees based in 22 countries outside of Australia providing services to hundreds of business and government customers.

Our customers are global, our people are local and our assets are anchored in Asia. Over several decades we have established one of the largest subsea cable networks in the Asia-Pacific, supplying wholesale and enterprise customers around the world. We also provide sophisticated network application services and have growing interests in software, video delivery, online sales and e-Health.

Telstra is growing our international business in three ways:

  • Leveraging our network to be a high-value communications partner for companies operating in the Asia-Pacific region through our Global Enterprise and Services division
  • In-country investment opportunities focused on connectivity
  • Bringing a suite of innovative solutions to market over the longer-term through targeted investments

Global Enterprise and Services

We provide technology solutions for business and government customers. including data and IP networks, and network application services, such as managed networks, unified communications, cloud, industry solutions and integrated services. These services are underpinned by our subsea cable network, with licences in Asia, Europe and the Americas, and access to more than 2,000 Points of Presence around the world.

We recently extended our reach by acquiring Pacnet Limited, which doubled our customer base in Asia and greatly increased our network reach and data centre capabilities. Also our joint venture, PBS, in China offers IP VPN connectivity services, together with state-of-the-art data centres.

In Indonesia, our joint venture with Telkom Indonesia, telkomtelstra, offers a suite of network application solutions to domestic enterprises and multinationals.

We also have a growing video analytics business through Ooyala, a US-based subsidiary of Telstra that is a leader in video streaming and analytics, which has been complemented by the acquisition of Videoplaza, a leader in video advertising, and Nativ, a cloud based media logistics software provider.

Connectivity

With the continued rapid growth in data consumption and mobiles becoming the primary device for key activities in business and leisure, there are exciting opportunities for growth in countries across the Asia-Pacific. We are actively looking at opportunities in key markets to invest in connectivity that will help people and businesses stay close to what matters most to them.

We believe the more connected people are, the more opportunities they have. That's why we help create a brilliant connected future for everyone, everyday. That’s why we build technology and content solutions that are simple and easy to use, including Australia’s largest and fastest national mobile network. That’s why we strive to serve and know our customers better than anyone else – offering a choice of not just digital connection, but digital content as well. And that’s why we have an international presence spanning 15 countries, including China. In the 21st century, opportunity belongs to connected businesses, governments, communities and individuals. As Australia’s leading telecommunications and information services company, Telstra is proud to be helping our customers improve the ways in which they live and work through connection.

Longer-term investments

We have an active investment strategy focused on high growth opportunities in technology and solutions that leverage Telstra assets and enable us to offer new services to our customers.

The Telstra Software Group creates long-term growth in markets adjacent to Telstra’s core business, while our venture capital group, Telstra Ventures, invests in breakthrough companies that complement our company strategy. Our ventures portfolio now consists of investments in 20 companies in Australia, the United States and Asia.

We are the majority shareholder in Autohome, the leading online destination for car buyers in China that receives millions of visitors to its websites every day.

Telstra is also the largest provider of e-health services in Australia and we are offering our services in this sector to healthcare providers in Asia.

In addition to working with entrepreneurs in Australia, Telstra’s start-up accelerator program, muru-D, operates in Singapore and has a presence in New Zealand.

Finally, Telstra Ventures is the corporate venture capital arm of Telstra. Based in Silicon Valley, Asia and Australia, we’ve invested in more than 37 leading technology companies since 2011.
