IPS – Inter Press Service is a non-governmental organization founded in 1964 in Rome, Italy. It is a global news agency that focuses on news and studies on various subjects – social, political, economic and cultural. It covers over 150 countries and has reporters in more than 400 locations. IPS has gained consultative status with ECOSOC at the United Nations.
The IPS philosophy is “giving voice to the voiceless”. The NGO’s explicit goals are to present the voices of those who are abused and vulnerable, to communicate important information from developing countries and to express the views of civil society. The main priority arears are the foregrounding of gender issues and the evaluation of the impact of globalization. IPS has a strategy that is reflected in its three main areas of work: the provision of news and content (creation of stories and analyses), capacity building (the empowerment of media organizations) and dissemination and networking (making connections between civil societies, international institutions, donor agencies, etc.).
