Green innovation centres in the agriculture and food sector (GIAE) is a worldwide programme that is part of One World, No Hunger, a global initiative launched by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development’s (BMZ). It aims to increase the income of small farmers, boost employment opportunities and improve the population’s food supply. The green innovation centre in Ghana is one of GIAE’s 13 fields of action.
A key focus of the promotion strategy is to introduce and disseminate innovations in the agricultural value chains, both at the level of agricultural producers, the suppliers, the marketing companies and the processing industry. Another key element of the promotion strategy is to involve the German and international private sector to lever growth in the agriculture and food sector in Ghana.
The subject of this invitation to tender is to promote innovation in the prioritised value chains: maize, rice and pineapple. The focus of the promotion strategy is the establishment and roll-out of a fund to disseminate innovation in the value chains identified. In addition, value chain-specific support will carried out in the following four areas of impact: supporting small-holder farmers; supporting processing and marketing companies; activities to support training institutions and advisory services, and to improve cooperation between stakeholders in the value chain; supporting knowledge management.
The project region consists of the following regions in Ghana: Brong Ahafo, Ashanti Region, Central Region, Eastern Region, Greater Accra and the Volta Region in southern Ghana.
This project makes a major contribution to attaining the following indicators of the project objective:
• small farmers’ income from sales of products in the selected value chains - maize, rice and pineapple – has risen in the project region;
• employment in the selected value chains (rice, maize and pineapple) has risen in the project region, with 20% of jobs going to young people and 35% to women;
• productivity of small farmers and the businesses upstream and downstream of the rice, maize and pineapple value chain has risen;
• take-up of training activities, including advisory services, has risen;
• associations representing the interests of the stakeholders in the value chain (rice, maize and pineapple) have been involved in creating the conditions needed for sustainable structural change;
• partnerships to promote innovation in the value chain (rice, maize and pineapple) in the partner countries are active at national, regional and/or global level.

Companies submitting an expression of interest for this tender should describe their experience in the following areas in particular:
• development, introduction and dissemination of innovations as part of a strategy to promote value chains (both at the level of the producers and marketing companies and the supplier and processing industries);
• setting up and implementing funds to promote innovation;
• involving government agencies (advisory services, research, administrative bodies) to improve the value chains and their enabling environment;
• supporting associations of agricultural producers and processing businesses, machinery pools, etc.;
• promoting training activities for agriculture and the processing industry designed to meet the demand for skills in the agriculture and food sector.

We welcome applications from companies with extensive experience in developing countries and emerging economies as well as those that work mainly in Germany in the above-mentioned fields and would also welcome collaboration between companies from the two categories.
