The objective of the US Embassy in Nigeria, located in Abuja, is to advance US interests while also serving and protecting US residents in Nigeria. Following the election of a civilian president in Nigeria in 1999, the US-Nigerian relationship improved, as did the collaboration on foreign policy objectives such as regional peacekeeping.
The United States' foreign policy is centered on important areas of mutual interest such as good governance, openness and integrity; energy and investment; regional stability; and agricultural and food security.
The United States' aid aims to strengthen local and national institutions, enhance institutional capacity in the delivery of health and education services and promote increases in agricultural production, rural employment expansion and expanded supplies of renewable energy. There is also a US Consulate General in Lagos.
