Description
The Ministry of Agriculture is one of the most important ministries of the Malawi Government. In view of the fact that Malawi’s economic mainstay is agriculture, the Ministry of Agriculture plays an important part in ensuring economic prosperity in the country.
The Ministry is politically headed by a minister and administratively led by the principal secretary. It is organized into seven departments –Agriculture Extension Services, Crops Development, Animal Health and Livestock Development, Agriculture Research, Agriculture Planning Services, Land Resource Conservation and Irrigation – each headed by a director and specializing their core functions and creating projects in their domain of expertise.
The Ministry is mandated to promote sustainable agricultural development policies that will ensure economic growth and a significant reduction in poverty. With a mission to increase agricultural productivity and offer food security for Malawi’s population, those in charge of the Ministry committed to providing the best available services through constant consultation with its partners. So far 10 projects have been developed and implemented with some of these still ongoing.
