Description

The Data and Software Documentation Specialist (Documentation Specialist) is responsible for developing, delivering, and maintaining online materials documenting FEWS NET Learning and Data Hub data platforms and processes.

 

The main objective is to refine and extend documentation for operational procedures, platforms, and metadata to build greater use of FEWS NET’s data and data platforms. The position will focus on creating accessible technical content for online help and learning systems, user support to apply documentation, and backstopping technical staff in drafting data documentation. The Documentation Specialist is also responsible for coordinating key stakeholders, contributing to  training users as requested, and monitoring the health of the supporting help system software applications.

 

The Documentation Specialist achieves this through expertise in online documentation and user support practices, technical writing, and familiarity with data-oriented software applications.

Responsibilities

Data and Systems Documentation

  • Develop, deliver, and maintain operational guidance, data documentation, help files, online manuals and training materials for FEWS NET Hub data platforms.
  • Write in explanatory and procedural styles for multiple audiences.
  • Consult with stakeholders to represent their needs through updates to software documentation.
  • Oversee external consultants for surge support and translation of systems-level documentation and help files for the FEWS NET data platform.

User Support and Training

  • Work with the Technical Communications Specialist and Customer Success Manager to develop traditional and multimedia training content for data systems through presentations, brief video tutorials, help system features, and online user guides.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in knowledge management, computer science, data analytics, international development, communications, or related field preferred.
  • Three to five years relevant work experience, particularly writing for help or documentation systems.
  • Proven experience in technical writing, with a focus on data and analysis a plus.
  • Excellent communication planning skills.
  • Strong file management and organizational skills.
  • Comfortable maintaining an adaptable and flexible work plan where focus and goals have the potential to shift rapidly.
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace, Google Sites, or comparable collaboration and intranet applications.
  • Enjoys the challenge of communicating complex and technical jargon in terms relatable to the average person.
  • Knowledge of markup languages and software documentation tools such as Markdown and Sphinx.
  • Familiarity with Mayan or similar document management platforms.
  • Experience with social media and content marketing.
  • Background in international development and government contracting.
