The Radio Room in DOHUK is to provide safety and security for all UNSMS personnel by effectively monitoring radio and other telephonic communications systems in case of an emergency.

The Radio Operators provide a variety of services including vehicle tracking, radio checks, transmitting and receiving radio messages, etc.

Duties and Responsibilities

Coordinate with UNDSS Security staff and/or UNDSS Radio Room, to facilitate accurate and efficient security-related information flow following established standard operating procedures;
Responsible for monitoring and channeling all radio communications including tracking of UNSMS vehicles and staff movement, to ensure efficient 24-hour coverage of telecommunications services;
Produce regular and ad hoc reports including daily radio checks and assist in preparation and dispatch of the summary of security incidents and other information to staff, to facilitate accurate, efficient and concise communication and information flow;
Provide efficient support and training to users on telecommunications equipment and procedures including Area SRM KRI requirements, to ensure effective use of telecommunications equipment;
Maintain inventory and provide recommendations for potential improvements, to support efficient planning and keep UNDSS telecommunications equipment operational;
Create and maintain databases (e.g. lists of call signs, addresses, telephone numbers, wardens, etc.), to ensure accurate information is available at all times;
Follow established emergency response processes and procedures, to ensure prompt assistance in case of emergencies;
Function / Expected Results. Coordination with UNDSS FSCO/FSA and UNDSS Radio Room Colleagues is set up and maintained. An accurate and efficient security-related information flow is organized;
Function / Expected Results. Responsibility for monitoring and channeling all radio communications including tracking of UNSMS vehicles and staff movement are well understood and taken. An efficient 24-hour coverage of telecommunications services is on place;
Function / Expected Results. Regular SITREPs and ad hoc reports including weekly radio checks and summary of security incidents are prepared and shared with UNDSS and concerned;
Function / Expected Results. An efficient support and training to users on telecommunications equipment and procedures including Area SRM KRI requirements is provided. Effective use of telecommunications equipment is insured;
Function / Expected Results. UNDSS telecommunications equipment is kept fully operational;
Function / Expected Results. Databases (e.g. lists of call signs, addresses, telephone numbers, wardens, etc.) is created and maintained to ensure accurate information is available at all times;
Function / Expected Results. Established emergency response processes and procedures, are well known, and followed up to ensure prompt assistance to UNSMS in case of emergencies.

Competencies

Good knowledge in the telecommunication operations and procedures and high standard computer literacy;
Ability to operate and maintain telecommunications equipment including installation works;
Good communication skills; ability to provide short briefings and communications clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
Ability to multi-task and respond simultaneously and in a timely fashion to demanding job requirements;
Ability to prioritize a heavy workload, demonstrate judgement, initiative, alertness and emotional stability, especially in emergency situations;
Good coordination and control skills to act swiftly and adequately in case of emergencies and resolve operational issues promptly;
High sense of discretion and integrity;
Client orientation and ability to establish effective working relationships in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment;
Ability to work in a team.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

High School certificate. Bachelor’s degree would be desirable, but it is not a requirement.

Experience:

Minimum 4 years of progressively relevant work experience in telecommunications/radio operations, information technology or other related field of work, OR 1 year of relevant experience with bachelor’s degree;
Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.);
Technical training in communication equipment is a strong asset.

Language Requirements:

Fluency in both oral and written communication in English, Arabic and Kurdish is required.
