Description: Development of the locally led technology transfer action plan and a blueprint for action for the uptake of rainwater harvesting system at the local level in Pakistan.

Background

Freshwater resources in Pakistan are under substantial stress due to growing population, urbanization, and unplanned land use. Water scarcity is expected to result in a wide range of socio-economic and environmental effects in Pakistan, especially impacting vulnerable communities including women and children.

While the application of rainwater harvesting system is important for sustainable water supply to local communities, there are barriers and limited capacity in identifying, deploying, and operating suitable technologies for the system at the local level.

A Consortium of organisations led by Zephyr Consulting, will implement a project to assess and select innovative rainwater harvesting system(s)/approaches at the local level in Pakistan. Central to this initiative is the creation of a locally led technology transfer action plan and a blueprint for action, which focuses on the uptake of the best and innovative rainwater harvesting technologies.

Project Objective

The overall goal is to enhance water security and climate resilience in a targeted local area in Pakistan through the implementation of a locally led innovative rainwater harvesting system/approach. The project will create a technology transfer action plan and a blueprint for action, facilitating the uptake and sustainable operation of the rainwater harvesting system.

 Key Requirements

In order to enhance water security and realise overarching goal and subsequent objectives, the project must:

  • Identify the target local areas where the rainwater harvesting system will be deployed.
  • Identify the stakeholders who will be involved in the project.
  • Identify best practices and technologies for rainwater harvesting.
  • Design/select innovative rainwater harvesting system/approach.
  • Develop a locally-led technology transfer action plan.
  • Develop a blueprint for action focused on rainwater harvesting.
  • Provide capacity building and awareness-raising activities.
  • The participation and interests of women shall be incorporated throughout the project.

The proposed solution for the objective of the project is to develop a locally led technology transfer action plan and a blueprint for action that focuses on the uptake of an innovative rainwater harvesting system(s) at the local level in Pakistan.
