It is one of the 19 cities of the Central Department, Paraguay. It originated at the end of the War of the Triple Alliance; was founded in 1945 and is located between the Paraguay River, Limpio, Luque and Asunción, about 18 km from the center of the country's capital. This optimal location has allowed for commercial, industrial, service, and social development.

It hosts the largest annual Expo in Paraguay, where industrial, commercial and service companies exhibit about the progress they have made in their respective areas. It is one of the cities with the highest economic growth in recent years.

The Remanso bridge is located in this district which connects with the Western Region (Chaco). It also has the largest private port in the country called "Puerto Fenix".
