The American Bar Association (“ABA”) has an opportunity for an unpaid intern to gain valuable experience while contributing to the important work of the ABA. The details of the unpaid internship opportunity are as follows:

ABA Department/Section/Entity: Europe and Eurasia Division, ABA Rule of Law Initiative

Work Location: Remote/telework (U.S. locations only).

Duration of Internship: eight (8) weeks If your academic institution or relevant program requires a different duration, please make note of such requirement in your cover letter and provide any supporting documentation for the ABA to consider.

Hours per week: 37.5 hours/week. If your academic institution or relevant program requires a different hourly requirement, please make note of such requirement in your cover letter and provide any supporting documentation for the ABA to consider.

Unpaid: This is an unpaid internship. Participation in the internship is not an offer of employment, and successful completion of the internship program does not entitle the selected intern to an employment offer from the ABA.

Description of Internship Opportunity: The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) is recruiting for an (unpaid) intern to help provide support to a program in Armenia funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The Armenia Integrity Project (AIP) works to reduce opportunities for corruption and reinforce public demand for improved governance and accountability in Armenia through 1) strengthening corruption prevention institutions and integrity systems; 2) supporting the implementation of specific legal-regulatory measures for corruption prevention; and 3) facilitating a collective action approach to hold local entities engaged in corruption prevention mutually accountable. The successful intern candidate will work remotely from their home of record. He/she will provide targeted support to the ABA ROLI legal team in developing, reviewing, and amending of key elements of the Government of Armenia’s Integrity System infrastructure, including both primary and secondary legislation, including the following areas: conflicts of interest; incompatibility requirements and other restrictions; declarations of income, property, interest, and expenditures; freedom of information; lobbying; regulatory impact assessment; and other areas.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the development of research documents, draft policy papers, explanatory memos, advisory opinions, and analysis of international best practices and international standards related to the above-mentioned areas in close collaboration with the ABA ROLI legal team and other stakeholders.
  • Participating in professional discussions and presenting professional opinions to the team.
  • Conducting research in collaboration with the ABA ROLI legal team

Eligibility: Candidates must be 18 years old or older and:

  • currently enrolled in a post-secondary academic institution (i.e., undergraduate, graduate) and enrolled in a program/area of study directly related to the purpose of the internship program. or
  • a recent (i.e., up to one (1) year) graduate of a post-secondary academic institution (i.e., undergraduate, graduate) with a degree in a program/area of study directly related to the purpose of the internship program.

Relevant Program/Area of Study: Corruption prevention, integrity systems, public administration

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in English, Knowledge of Armenian is desirable, not required
  • Strong analytical and research skills.
  • Strong motivation to learn, fast learner.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills.
  • High standards of ethics.
  • Strong organizational skills.
