Short project description:
The Project concerns the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in priority protected areas in Ethiopia. The purpose of the Project is to effectively manage protected areas in collaboration and partnership with local communities and other stakeholders. This is to sustainably conserve the biodiversity and landscapes and to contribute to the economic development of the areas and to an improved livelihood of the local population.

The Project concerns the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in priority protected areas in Ethiopia, namely Bale Mountain National Park (BMNP) and the Semien Mountain National Park (SNMP), with the potential extension of support to other areas.

The project aims at the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and landscapes in priority protected areas and the improvement of the livelihood of the local population. For this purpose, the following outputs are foreseen:

  • Improved infrastructure and equipment in the selected protected areas
  • Strengthened protected area management in the selected protected areas
  • Participation of local communities

GENERAL TASKS:
The Conservation Expert (m/f/d) shall guide the project in all strategic conservation tasks and will support the project in managerial issues. The Conservation Expert (m/f/d) will work under the guidance and supervision of the Chief Technical Advisor and will provide guidance both to EWCA and the co-financing implementation partners.

Education:

  • Postgraduate university degree in a discipline of natural resource management
  • A higher educational degree specifically in nature conservation would be an asset

Regional experience:
Knowledge of the nature conservation sector beyond Ethiopia (at least through training and study visits)

Languages:
Proficiency in the English language (oral and written English)

Expertise / Profile:
Expertise in the following fields of work is needed:

  • Conservation management experience: Very good knowledge of the conservation sector in Ethiopia. Several years work experience in park / protected area management. The work should include both experience on local park level and experience on the national strategic level; track record in integrated rural development and community development
  • Public sector experience: Work experience in the public sector in Ethiopia and familiarity with administrative procedures and processes
  • Leadership experience: Work experience as team leader, deputy team leader, coordinator or similar positions
  • Networking experience: Strong networking experiences in the rural area of Ethiopia, e.g. to the target group, local governments, local decision makers, NGOs
  • Donor experience: Work with international donors/institutions would be an asset
  • ESHS experience: Work experiences with Environmental, Social, Health and Safety safeguards would be an asset
