DESCRIPTION OF THE ASSIGNMENT 

Global objective  

Strengthen the European Union Delegation to Zambia knowledge of Solid Waste Management and material recovery. 

 Objective(s) of the assignment  

Offer a webinar on material recovery, focusing on composting and recycling and considering waste mining, to provide the EUD in Zambia with:  

  • Practical knowledge for project identification and approaches for the development of material recovery actions, focusing on composting and recycling, and its effective implementation and operation. Waste mining will be considered and included if deemed relevant.  

  • An understanding of the challenges, opportunities, requirements and risks of composting and recycling projects/programmes in cities, in the Sub-Saharan Africa region. 

EXPERTS PROFILE or EXPERTISE REQUIRED 

Expertise required

The expert(s) must meet the following requirements to deliver the items described in this ToR:  

Qualifications and skills  

  • A graduate or postgraduate degree or master's degree in environmental engineering, environmental planning, sustainable management or other fields related to solid waste management.  

  • Knowledge of the SWM Value Chain: prevention and reuse, collection and transfer, material and energy recovery, and final disposal. 

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, in both spoken and written EnglishStrong facilitation skills and the ability to engage participants in interactive and impactful learning experiences.  

  • Proven expertise in training design, development, and delivery in Solid Waste Management training, webinars, guidelines, cases studies, videos, and other formats. Familiarity with different training delivery formats (in-person, virtual, hybrid).   

Professional Experience  

  • At least 10 years of relevant experience in the Solid Waste Management Sector. 

  • At least 7 years of relevant experience in structuring and implementing SWM infrastructure projects in developing countries. 

  • Experience in material recovery, in particular in organic waste management and composting, and recoverable materials management, treatment and recycling. Experience in waste mining is a plus. 

  • Knowledge of SWM business models and financing; including the roles or the public sector, and the private sector, large, SMEs and informal sector. 

  • Experience in the development and implementation of urban waste projects in developing countries. Experience in Sub-Saharan Africa is a plus. 

  • Experience in participating in dialogue with public and private sector stakeholders. Experience in working with EU institutions will be considered an asset.
