MiCT is calling for proposals for a freelance Media Research and Evaluation Specialist in the framework of its program “MiCT Fellowship for Critical Voices 2025”, funded by the German Federal Foreign Office. MiCT invites interested and qualified persons to submit proposals by 10.06.2025.

1. Introducing MiCT

Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) is a non-profit organisation delivering expert media services in complex and challenging contexts with passion, precision and agility. Through our collaborative work with our partners, we foster transparent, inclusive and fair dialogue supporting resilient societies that thrive.

Across three continents and 15 countries, MiCT facilitates the training of journalists and media producers, programme and content development, radio and film production, magazine and book publishing, media research and monitoring, in addition to supporting the financial viability of our partners.

2. The Program

The MiCT Critical Voices Fellowship is aimed at media professionals from crisis and conflict countries who share a common value in their professional journalistic integrity. The program is currently focused on journalists and media makers from Afghanistan, Belarus, Ukraine, Sudan and Myanmar - with a global mandate. Fellows receive financial and health support, expert safety advice, online and offline training, legal and psycho-social support, production advice, and access to a global community of like-minded media professionals.

3. Description of the role

MiCT is looking for a researcher to support project implementation for up to 40 days in total.

Deliverables include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct research into the current state of independent media in Sudan and East African countries.
  • Assist in reviewing and synthesizing background information on journalist candidates submitted by partner organisations.
  • Conduct necessary background and credibility checks on candidates, including verification of identity, affiliations, and prior work, with sensitivity to security risks and exile contexts.
  • Handle all data and documents with strict confidentiality, applying a risk-informed lens that reflects the operating environment and personal security concerns of candidates.
  • Close coordination with our related partner team and community managers.
  • Available for regular meetings with the MiCT headquarter team in Berlin.

4. Application Requirements

Successful applicants should be able to provide proof of the following:

  • A minimum 5 years of experience in journalism, media development in Sudan and/or East Africa and/or the Horn of Africa.
  • Experience in vetting or evaluating candidates for fellowships, grants, or sensitive positions.
  • Strong understanding of the political and media landscapes in Sudan and/or countries in East Africa and/or in the Horn of Africa.
  • Fluency in English is required, along with proficiency in at least one other language commonly spoken in East Africa or the Horn of Africa—such as Arabic or a local language.
  • Proven ability to work independently, manage sensitive information, and apply sound judgment.

5. What we offer

We welcome applicants globally to join our small, creative and international team. MiCT can provide safe, creative working environments in Tbilisi/Georgia, Islamabad/Pakistan, Chiang Mai/Thailand, Kyiv/Ukraine or Berlin/Germany where required, with preference for the candidate to be regionally based in Nairobi. Remote candidates are welcome to apply. The contract will run until maximum June 2026 on a freelance basis.
