Project Background

The Rogun Hydropower Project (the Project) is a large project under construction on the Vakhsh River in Tajikistan, upstream of Nurek HPP, and about 110 km East North-East of Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan. Upon completion, it will have an installed capacity of 3,780 MW, a 335-meter-high dam, a 13.3 km3 reservoir, and expected average annual generation of 14,400 GWh. It is intended to provide energy for domestic (Tajik) customers and export revenues. The Project will become the main pillar of Tajikistan’s electricity system and have a significant potential to contribute to decarbonization of electricity systems of Central Asian countries. The Project will ensure reliable electricity supply to meet the growing domestic demand at affordable cost. The large reservoir would also provide electricity network balancing services and improve the resilience of the entire Vakhsh cascade of HPPs, which account for 95 percent of total hydro generation in Tajikistan, through mitigation of flooding risks. At the regional level, the Project is expected to play a crucial role in decarbonizing the electricity grids of Central Asian electricity networks, which currently heavily rely on coal and gas for electricity generation.
