Founded in 1980, Médecins du Monde France (MdM-F) is a campaigning medical organisation that strives for international solidarity. Through actions and the law, through our field work and advocacy, we fight tirelessly to defend a fair and universal healthcare system in France and some thirty other countries around the world. We are committed to caring for the most vulnerable populations, bearing witness to abuses in access to healthcare, denouncing infringements of dignity and human rights, and obtaining sustainable improvements in health policies for all.
Environment and Health (EH) is one of the 6 thematics (political battles) prioritized by the organization and has been implemented through projects in Nepal since 2017.
The projects were engaged in improving the health and wellbeing of marginalized communities, particularly informal waste workers and farmers, through multiple initiatives with a strong partnership approach.
All the EH projects in Nepal are ending and it’s important to keep track of what was done during the 8 past years of project implementation in EH and a Nepal mission capitalization on EH projects from 2017 to 2025 was decided.
MdM-F implemented its Environment and Health approach in Nepal since 2017. First, with the project “Healthy Waste Workers in Kathmandu Valley” implemented in August 2017 to December 2019 that aimed to improve the health status of informal waste workers in Kathmandu Valley and Sisdole landfill site, mitigating their occupational risks and environmental exposure, improving access to information and increasing access to health services. Then from October 2020 to July 2024, the project “Healthy Waste Workers for Sustainable Waste Management” was implementend in Kathmandou. In September 2020, MdM-F opened a project in Nepalgunj to support informal Waste Workers. This project was extended to a second phase, named “Supporting Environmental Health and Occupational Health in Banke”, that included activities on farmers health and their working conditions. The last project to be developped under EH thematic in Nepal was a project on pesticide misuse and its health consequences in Kavrepalanchowk, Ramechhap, and Sindhupalchowk districts. In this project, MdM-F focused on health risk mitigation for farmers, awareness of pesticide-related health issues, and integrated occupational health and safety (OHS) issues through strengthening and supporting government health facilities.
On the one hand, all these projects were very important for the EH thematic, as it allowed to diversify and scale up EH projects within MdM-F, and disseminate them to another country, as initially, EH projects were mainly implemented in the Philippines. On the other hand, the EH projects in Nepal contributed to change and improve the global EH approach within MdM-F.
