Description

The Reporter is a non-profit media entity initiated and established by The Reporter Cultural Foundation, operating under a non-profit framework that prioritizes public service over profit generation. Its organizational structure draws on the mature model of global non-profit journalism institutions, with a clear separation of governance and editorial functions to ensure operational transparency and editorial independence.

The core of the organization is its professional editorial and reporting team, composed of experienced in-depth reporters, investigative journalists, and fact-checkers. The editorial team operates independently, with no interference from the board or external funders in specific editorial decisions—a cornerstone of maintaining journalistic integrity. To enhance professional capabilities, the team regularly participates in global investigative journalism exchanges and collaborates with international non-profit media networks.

In line with the characteristics of non-profit journalism, The Reporter’s funding mainly comes from grants from The Reporter Cultural Foundation, individual donations, and project-based grants from philanthropic organizations that support public interest journalism. It strictly abides by the principle of diversified funding to avoid over-reliance on a single funding source. All funding information is publicly disclosed annually in the form of a financial report to accept social supervision and ensure that funds are fully used for in-depth reporting and investigative journalism projects.

To strengthen our investigative capacity, we are seeking a passionate and seasoned Senior Journalist or Analyst to join our team, bringing specialized expertise to elevate the depth and influence of our journalism.

As a Senior Journalist or Analyst, you will be a core contributor to our in-depth reporting projects, providing authoritative, data-driven analysis and industry insights. You will bridge sector expertise with journalistic storytelling, supporting our editorial team to uncover root causes of complex issues, verify facts, and deliver impactful reports that advance public understanding and accountability. Your work will directly align with our mission to promote social progress through high-quality public service journalism.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct rigorous research and analysis on industry trends, regulatory changes, and systemic challenges across focus areas (e.g., public policy, environmental governance, educational equity, corporate accountability, or social justice—aligned with organizational priorities).
  • Collaborate closely with investigative journalists, editors, and fact-checkers to provide expert guidance on story development, validate sources, interpret complex data, and ensure accuracy and depth in reporting.
  • Develop data-driven insights and actionable analysis to support long-term investigative projects, including identifying hidden patterns, assessing policy implications, and forecasting industry impacts on public welfare.
  • Liaise with external stakeholders (policymakers, researchers, grassroots organizations, and industry experts) to gather insights, verify information, and expand our network of authoritative sources.
  • Contribute to strategic topic planning by identifying underreported industry issues that align with our public interest mission, and propose research frameworks to explore these topics.
  • Support the organization’s impact-oriented goals by tracking how our reporting (informed by your analysis) influences policy debates, public discourse, and social change.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum 5+ years of professional industry analysis experience in fields relevant to public interest journalism (e.g., government sector, public policy, environmental science, corporate governance, or social services). Candidates with firsthand sources will be given priority consideration.
  • Exceptional research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex data, interpret regulations into clear, actionable insights for journalistic storytelling.
  • Deep understanding of journalistic ethics and commitment to truth-seeking, accuracy, and public service—aligned with The Reporter’s core values.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and engage with diverse stakeholders (journalists, experts, community members).

What We Offer

  • Competitive hourly rate ($80- $120 per hour) commensurate with experience and expertise.
  • Flexible work arrangements to support work-life balance.
  • The chance to contribute to high-impact reporting that shapes public discourse and drives social change.

How to Apply

If you are passionate about public service journalism and ready to use your analytical skills to uncover truth and drive impact, we want to hear from you. Please submit the following materials to ben@twreporter.com:

  • A detailed resume/CV highlighting your relevant experience and qualifications.
  • 1-2 samples of your analytical work (e.g., reports, whitepapers, or data analyses) that demonstrate your ability to translate complex information into actionable insights.
