The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the Government of Nepal (GoN), represented by Ministry of Population and Environment (MoPE), Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport (MoPIT) and the Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development (MoFALD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding formalizing the partnership between GGGI and GoN. The MoU signing ceremony was held in the new GGGI Nepal Program office in Singha Durbar.
MoPE Secretary, Dr Bishwa Nath Oli said: “The Government of Nepal is dedicated to efficiently allocate and use its resources to develop our country’s economy while at the same time making it more sustainable. In order to achieve this aim, planning and implementing green growth practices is crucial. I wish to thank GGGI for supporting us on this promising journey. Furthermore, I am optimistic that our common work will enhance the capacity of the GoN for building a country prepared to fulfil the needs of its future generations.”
The partner ministries reinforced Dr Oli’s views about GGGI’s 2017-2018 programmatic focus in Nepal and voiced their full support in making these programs a success.
Thanking all partner ministries, GGGI Nepal Country Representative, Dr Prasoon Agarwal, expressed his enthusiasm in working with the Nepal Government and said, “We are excited to be part of a country that is working hard to realize its green growth potential. Through our various program initiatives, we aim to contribute to this green developmental process”.
As part of the GGGI Nepal 2017-2018 work program document, GGGI will provide technical support to the government in developing the NDC implementation plan for electric mobility, pipeline of bankable projects, as well as assessing the feasibility of electric bus pilot initiative under the Electric Mobility Program. In coordination with several partner municipalities, GGGI will also be streamlining green economic activities into the municipalities’ development process, under the Green Municipality Development Program.
In addition to signing the MoU, GGGI also officially opened its new office space within the Ministry of Population and Environment (MoPE) in Singha Durbar, Kathmandu. The office space is provided by MoPE in support of GGGI’s long-term cooperation and technical assistance towards green growth planning and implementation in Nepal.
GGGI began its operations in Nepal in 2015. Since then, GGGI has been successful in establishing ties with various ministries through the Green Growth Potential Assessment and Country Planning Framework activities. The Electric Mobility and Green Municipality Development initiatives of GGGI were recently launched in cooperation with Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport (MoPIT) and Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development (MoFALD), respectively.
