Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths allocated US$8.5 million from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund to support the response to people affected by internal displacement, floods, and cholera in Niger.

The funds will help provide health care, water, and sanitation, hygiene, shelter, non-food items, protection, and education support to more than 720,000 people.

This includes rapid assistance to more than 81,600 vulnerable people, including newly displaced, returnees and members of host communities in the regions of Diffa, Maradi, Tahoua, and Tillabéri.

UN agencies – including UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) – and their partners will implement the related projects.

As of 18 September, more than 4,600 cases of cholera, including 149 deaths, have been registered.

Flooding has affected nearly 200,000 people.
