UNESCO‘s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) is the only intergovernmental cooperation program of the United Nations system dedicated to water research and management, and related education and capacity development. The IHP seeks to enable all stakeholders to participate in the creation of a new, sustainable, water culture. The IHP’s just started its ninth phase (IHP-IX, 2022-2029), which puts science to action for a Water Secure World, in a Changing Environment.

The planning, definition of priorities, and supervision of the execution of IHP are ensured by its Intergovernmental Council. Every two years the Council members meet in a plenary session. The 25th session of the IHP Council will take place between 26 and 29 April 2022 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

The “Science for a water-secure world in a changing environment: A contribution to United Nations Water Conference 2023” is a side-event prior to the 25th IHP Council that focuses on the discussion of the IHP-IX (2022-2029) “Science for a Water Secure World in a Changing Environment” and how its implementation can enhance the scientific research agenda for the UN 2023 Water Conference.

The event is structured around three panels:

  • Science Policy
  • Water Education and Capacity Development
  • Scientific Research and Innovation
