The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has launched the fifth round of the JK Visionaries Award—the highest honour bestowed by the IDB to recognize nongovernmental organizations that carry out transformative social projects in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The award was created in 2009 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Bank, honouring Juscelino Kubitschek (JK), the former President of Brazil (1956-1961), who was instrumental in establishing the IDB.

The winning organization will receive US$100,000 in recognition of its work and to further encourage its efforts to improve lives. A second organization will receive an award of US$50,000, while third and fourth place winners will each receive US$25,000.

This round has been restructured so the award will have a wider reach and greater impact in the region. Interested institutions should fill out the online form and include a video presentation. The rules and forms are available on the JK webpage.

Winners are selected by two Committees. The Technical Selection Committee, consisting of Bank specialists, will select the finalists. The Executive Selection Committee—composed of the President and members of Senior Management of the Bank, a past winner, and Enrique V. Iglesias, former IDB President, as an honorary member—will select the winners.

After an exhaustive selection process, the winners in the fourth round, selected from among more than 370 nominees, were: Instituto Promundo (Brazil) and Fondo Ecuatoriano Populorum Progressio (Ecuador), who shared the award in the Social, Cultural, and Scientific category; and Fonkoze (Haiti), which won in the Economics and Finance category.

The deadline for nominations is 31 March.
