5th Global Conference Of The Sustainable Food Systems Programme

5th Global Conference Of The Sustainable Food Systems Programme

📅 27 – 29 May 2025
Brasilia, Brazil

The 5th global conference of the SFS Programme aims to inspire and encourage policymakers to make bold decisions in key policy forums in 2025, such as the UNFSS+4 Stocktaking Moment and UNFCCC COP30.

The UN Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) in 2021, and its stocktaking process that will run until 2030, built up significant momentum to transform food systems towards more sustainability, resilience, and equity.

Since then, over 110 countries have developed National Pathways for Food Systems Transformation, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) was adopted, and 160 countries signed the UAE Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems and Climate Action (hereafter UAE Declaration).

However, the implementation of these and other related commitments is often hampered by political economy dynamics, such as existing lock-ins, power imbalances, or geopolitical tensions.

To maintain and further accelerate global momentum for food systems transformation, this conference will showcase concrete solutions that can be adapted and replicated in different contexts.

The conference will highlight national and subnational case studies of examples of how political economy barriers were successfully overcome by policies and actions at the intersection of food systems, nutrition, climate, biodiversity, livelihoods, equality, and other related policy agendas.

The conference will provide a space for Rio Convention negotiators, officials in food systems-relevant line ministries in collaboration with their Food Systems National Convenors, as well as UNFSS coalitions and other relevant multi-actor initiatives and further food systems actors, to gain a better understanding, guidance, tools and resources to deepen their collective efforts towards more equitable and sustainable food systems pathways, including by adopting a Right to Food based approach and promoting the coherent implementation of their nutrition, climate, biodiversity, and other relevant commitments.

Building on the recommendations of the SFS Programme’s 4th global conference and the impetus generated by the UNFCCC COP28 Consensus and UAE Declaration, the KMGBF, and the UNFSS stocktaking process, and mindful of other related processes such as the the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, Nutrition for Growth Summit, and the WTO Agriculture negotiations, the objectives of the 5th global conference are:

  • To encourage meaningful, inclusive and cross-sectoral collaboration at all levels to urgently address food systems challenges through convergence across all related policy areas.
  • To inspire action to overcome the barriers to food systems transformation by showcasing integrated solutions for the coherent implementation of global commitments across different policy areas.
  • To stimulate further mainstreaming of food systems in all relevant multilateral agreements and policy fora, financial institutions as well as donor and investment strategies.
