Does North Korea really lack internet connection?

Not quite. The North Korean authorities supervise email and the internet which are only accessible to a limited number of authorized people. The average person lacks access to the internet although the country has a very strong intranet.

North Korea’s Kwangmyong is a completely separate network from the global internet and is accessible only within the country. It is closed, state-controlled, and runs as a domestic substitute for the global internet with webpages intended exclusively for North Koreans. It also features an internal email system and a handful of sites from the actual internet. Although it is largely a closed network, locals who have cell phones can search for weather reports, send messages, and undertake other internet-related tasks.

Why does Cuba have the slowest broadband and mobile internet connectivity?

There are two main reasons that could explain this.

1️⃣ Increasing number of users that the telecom infrastructure cannot handle – The rising number of active mobile phone connections and increasing number of internet users has had a serious impact on the international output capacity of Cuba’s telecom systems, according to local authorities.

2️⃣ Fragile electrical grid – The country’s old power plants and fragile electrical infrastructure have worsened the situation with an increasing number of power outages occurring around the country.

Final word

The global internet landscape is showing remarkable progress, with the number of internet users growing from under 40% of global population in 2015 to over 67% in 2025. China boasts the largest online population, while countries in the EU and the Middle East enjoy the highest internet penetration rates.

Internet speeds vary significantly across the globe with nations such as Singapore offering affordable and fast connections, while others face higher costs or limited infrastructure.
