European Peace Facility backs Moldova's air defense with €120 million measure

The Council of the European Union on 13 July 2026 adopted an assistance measure worth €120 million under the European Peace Facility to support the Armed Forces of the Republic of Moldova and enhance the country’s air defense capabilities, according to a press release by the Council of the EU. The decision aims to reinforce Moldova’s defensive posture. It builds on earlier EU-funded initiatives dedicated to air surveillance and air defense. With this latest step, the EU deepens its cooperation with Moldovan security institutions. The measure reflects a continued commitment to strengthening the country’s protective infrastructure.

The European Peace Facility was established in March 2021 to finance all Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) actions in military and defense areas. Its stated objectives are preventing conflict, preserving peace, and strengthening international security and stability. The instrument allows the EU to finance actions designed to strengthen the capacities of third states and regional and international organizations in military and defense matters. It provides a structured channel for coordinated European support. Moldova has been among the recipients of successive assistance measures under this facility.

The newly adopted measure will finance a mid-range air defense system for the benefit of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Moldova. It complements previous EPF assistance measures supporting air surveillance and air defense. The additional resources are intended to close specific capability gaps identified by Moldovan authorities. The measure forms part of a broader engagement between the EU and Moldova. It underlines the technical dimension of the partnership.

According to the Council, this support “will continue to enable the Moldovan Armed Forces to improve their operational effectiveness and thereby better protect civilians.” The statement highlights both a military and a civilian protection dimension. The wording reflects the dual purpose behind the assistance. It confirms the orientation toward operational readiness. It also frames the initiative within a protective mandate for the population.

With this new action, the EU’s overall support to Moldova under the European Peace Facility now stands at €317 million. The figure marks a cumulative record of engagement through the instrument. It signals sustained EU attention to Moldova’s defense sector. The Council’s decision consolidates the trajectory of prior assistance measures. It closes the current step in a continuing program of cooperation.
