Almost half the world’s population – 3.2 billion people – are at risk for malaria. In 2016, there were 216 million cases of malaria, and almost half a million people died from malaria.
In the United States, more than 1,700 imported cases are diagnosed each year. The devastating human and economic costs of malaria are estimated to be at least 12 billion dollars each year. Thanks to the massive scale-up of malaria prevention and treatment interventions from global partners, including CDC, almost 7 million lives have been saved globally since 2001. CDC works hand-in-hand with Ministries of Health, partners, and U.S. government agencies to prevent and control malaria through scientific leadership.
