France on Thursday, May 10, signed a 500,000 euros agreement with two humanitarian organizations to support humanitarian aid in Borno state.

Guillaume de Kerdrel, the first counselor of the French Embassy in Abuja, signed the agreement with Première Urgence Internationale (PUI) and Alima. PUI and Alima are both active in providing aid in the north-east region of Nigeria.

Ambassador Guillaume indicated that the money would be dedicated strictly to fund two projects in the region.

He said: “The 500,000 Euros will cater to two specific projects. The first is aimed at improving medical care for children suffering from malnutrition in the newly accessible parts of Kukawa local government area in Borno. The second is aimed at improving the food security of vulnerable populations in Maiduguri.

“The French government through the French Embassy in Nigeria is expressing its commitment to contributing to humanitarian efforts that will lead to the continual rehabilitation and restoration of the north-eastern region of Nigeria which has suffered greatly from the insurgency of the terrorist group, Boko Haram.”

In response to the humanitarian woes caused by Boko Haram terrorist group, donor countries who met in Oslo, Norway, raised the sum of 860 million dollars (634 million euros) in emergency aid to address the effects in north-east Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin.

The amount was pledged over three years and was aimed at helping 10.7 million people in need. The UN had also previously said it hoped to raise 1.5 billion dollars in 2017 for the region, which includes Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, and Chad.
