Mission Innovation is a global initiative of 22 countries and the European Commission (on behalf of the EU) that seek to dramatically accelerate global clean energy innovation. Countries members representing around 60% of the world population and over 80% of global clean energy research budgets have pledged to double their government investment in clean energy research and innovation over the next five years while encouraging greater levels of private sector investment in transformative clean energy technologies.

Mission Innovation was announced at the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2015 (COP21), where the historic Paris Agreement, a landmark in the fight against climate change, was signed by 195 countries. The European Commission joined the initiative on behalf of the EU in June 2016 at the 1st Mission Innovation Ministerial in San Francisco.

On May 22, 2018, the European Commission co-hosted, together with Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Nordic Council of Ministers, the 3rd Mission Innovation Ministerial in Malmö, where the focus was made on increasing private sector engagement. It was an extraordinary opportunity for energy policymakers to inspire, create engagement and build momentum towards Mission Innovation’s common goal of accelerating clean energy innovation.
