The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is ready to assist Armenia’s health authorities in the implementation of new programs, the head of the EBRD Yerevan Office Dimitri Gvindadze said today when meeting with Armenian Health Minister Arsen Torosyan.

Gvindadze said the bank’s involvement depends on private investments. He said if that happens, the bank is ready for close cooperation because health is the area where it and the Armenian government can work effectively.

Torosyan said that the ministry received a set of proposals already to make new investments in the sector. “Now we need to properly distribute and systematize them,” he said.

In the context of reforming the healthcare system, the minister highlighted the introduction and broad coverage of the insurance system. Today, a pilot insurance program for civil servants is underway, which is supposed to expand in future and embrace about 600 thousand people from a particular group.

“This does not solve all the problems, but it significantly changes the situation. Gradually, over the next 3-4 years we will achieve a broader coverage,” he said.

Gvindadze offered his experience and personal assistance regarding implementation of systemic reforms. The minister accepted the offer happily.

EBRD is one of the leading institutional investors in Armenia. As of the beginning of September of last year, the package of bilateral cooperation between Armenia and the EBRD included 158 programs worth about 1.1 billion euros.
