Consulting Engineers deliver on UN Sustainable Goals

The Danish Association of Consulting Engineers, FRI, launches a publication, which shows how the Danish consulting engineering companies contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s). The publication “Engineering a better and sustainable world” contains 39 concrete cases in which FRI member companies have contributed to the fulfillment of the UN global goals.

FRI’s new publication, Engineering a better and sustainable world, focuses on the ability of Danish consulting engineering companies to combine their in-depth understanding of sustainable development in the widest sense with new technology and solutions that work in practice.

”The Danish consulting engineering companies take part in fulfilling every one of the 17 goals. Construction of new infrastructure, clean drinking water, good buildings, urban planning or parameters such as gender equality or education, they all require professional consulting engineers to fulfill the goal.” Henrik Garver, Managing Director of FRI, explains and continues: “The real-world projects make a huge impact on people, society and the environment in the recipient countries.”

The FRI companies work globally and often enter into partnerships with international financial institutions such as the World Bank, EU or Danida to address global problems in a local context in low and middle- income countries. The FRI companies that have provided cases are COWI A/S, DEM, NIRAS A /S, NTU International A/S, Rambøll Denmark A/S and Sweco Danmark A/S.

The report “Engineering a better and sustainable world” has examples of projects in Albania, Bangladesh, Benin, Egypt, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kenya, China, Croatia, Laos, Malaysia, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Serbia, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Zambia.

Facts

September 25, 2015, the 17 Worldwide Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted at the United Nations Summit in New York. The targets came into force on January 1, 2016, and by 2030, they will set the direction towards more sustainable development for both people and the planet we live in. The World targets constitute 17 concrete goals which commit all UN countries to abolish hunger and poverty, secure education, decent jobs, sustainable economic growth, better health and reduce inequalities. They will promote peace, security and strong institutions and tackle climate change. The new world goals are unique because they call for action by all countries, poor and rich.
