On the occasion of his country visit to Cabo Verde and in the margins of the CPLP Summit in Sal, the Director General for International Cooperation and Development (DEVCO), Stefano Manservisi, reaffirmed the EU’s Special Partnership with Cabo Verde and reiterated the European Unions’ full support to the National Sustainable Development Programme (2017-2021) of the country.
Further to recent emergency supports provided by the EU in the context of Cabo Verde’s vulnerability to natural disasters as a SIDS and Sahel country (14 MEUR), today’s signature of the mid-term review top-up of the National Indicative Programme under the 11th European Development Fund is yet again an expression for the EU’s engagement and trust in Cabo Verde as a strategic partner.
The Commissioner for International Cooperation and development, Neven Mimica, said: “The new 10MEUR that we add to our cooperation portfolio with Cabo Verde reflects our continued support to a country with which we share a special partnership. This increase will aim at strengthening economic governance, the development of the energy sector and the mainstreaming of gender issues into Cabo Verde’s policies.”
The new top-up of 10 MEUR will be included in the ongoing Budget Support (Good Governance and Development contract) bringing its total to 74 MEUR.
Since the adoption of the NIP in 2014 (initial allocation of 50 MEUR), the goals and priorities on development cooperation have significantly evolved, notably with the adoption of the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda in 2015 and, at the EU level, the Global Strategy for the EU Foreign and Security Policy in 2016 and the new European Consensus on Development in 2017.
