Since 2007, national education policy has been a focus of EU support for Greenland, and on November 14 it has received a further boost. A Financing Agreement for € 32.11 million for 2018-2019 to support the education sector in Greenland was signed in Brussels between the European Commission and the Government of Greenland.
This funding highlights the EU’s continued commitment to sustainable development in Greenland, in particular through a robust education and vocational training system. Moreover, it reflects the efforts and solid progress that the Government of Greenland has made to improve outcomes across the education system, from pre-school to higher education, and the continued engagement of the European Union in supporting Greenland in the implementation of its social and development policies.
The Commissioner of International Cooperation and Development, Mr. Neven Mimica stressed that: “Our continued fruitful cooperation with Greenland is making a tangible difference to people’s lives. This is especially true of our support for Greenland’s education system, which we want to see provide the highly educated, highly skilled labor force that delivers economic growth and a higher standard of living for everyone. The extra € 32 million in funding that we are providing today is clear evidence of our ongoing commitment to work together for a higher-quality, more accessible and more efficient education system in Greenland, and to further strengthen the partnership between the European Union and Greenland in the Arctic”.
