The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) are jointly scaling up efforts to support an energy transformation through the widespread adoption and sustainable use of renewable energy.
A joint declaration was signed by Mr. Li Yong, UNIDO’s Director General and Mr. Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA, on the margins of the UN Secretary General’s Climate Action Summit currently taking place in New York. As part of the declaration, the two organizations confirmed their intent to work together on renewable energy, access to energy, rural electrification, climate change, and sustainable development in developing countries and emerging economies globally.
“Supporting sustainable energy pathways is critical to realising the goals of the Paris Agreement, achieving universal energy access and supporting the Sustainable Development Goals. Collaboration between UNIDO and IRENA will serve to amplify the impact of our individual efforts,” expressed Li Yong of the joint declaration.
“Renewable energy is a key climate action tool and an important contributor to the achievement of the 2030 sustainable development goals, particularly SDG7 – the provision of affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all,” said Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA. “This agreement will intensify our joint efforts to unlock renewable energy investment and substantially increase the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix,” said Francesco La Camera, IRENA’s Director-General.
Scaling-up renewable energy investments in developing and emerging markets is a key aspect of transforming energy systems. As such, the two organizations have agreed to work on providing access to project facilitation, capacity building, support in implementing technical standards and quality infrastructure for renewable energy systems, technical assistance and project development support to advance projects towards financial closure and implement joint outreach activities to support the development of bankable renewable energy projects with the IRENA Project Navigator.
IRENA and UNIDO will also strengthen actions to scale-up integrated and inclusive sustainable energy technology markets at the sub-regional level, through the Global Network of Regional Sustainable Energy Centres (in which UNIDO partners with sub-regional economic communities/organisations and their Members States), as well as through IRENA’s Clean Energy Corridors.
