Solar mini-grids are independent, decentralised energy systems that are cheap, reliable and can operate outside of a national electricity grid.
In Bangladesh, two solar mini-grids have provided reliable energy for the first to the communities on the remote island of Monpura. This was a game-changer for people living on the island.
Backed by UNDP and with funding from the Global Environment Facility, the Bangladeshi company IDCOL implemented this project and won an award for its mini-grids work in Bangladesh.
In addition to UNDP and the GEF, IDCOL partners with numerous development actors across the country, including the World Bank, JICA, UKAID, KfW, USAID, GPOBA and ADB. The award will be handed over to IDCOL at the 6th ARE Energy Access Investment Forum to be held in September 2020 in Lusaka, Zambia.
