This year the United Nations is marking its 75th anniversary. The anniversary marks a period of extraordinary progress in Asia and the Pacific and a period of ever-growing regional cooperation including through the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. The Anniversary also comes at the critical juncture of a new decade to advance towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the recovery from an unprecedented global health crisis coupled with severe economic and social impacts. The need for innovative solutions and stronger cooperation across all stakeholders is clear.

Many of these seeds of transformation have already been planted within the region, including by the region’s young population. Asia and the Pacific is witnessing a myriad of innovative solutions by young innovators. They are making clean energy more affordable and accessible for all. They are working to give women and girls the opportunity to participate, to learn, and to prosper. And they are testing new solutions to help the poor access basic services and products. In many ways, they are carrying the mantle of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The event is expected to bring together different perspectives of stakeholders in Asia and the Pacific to:

  • Reflect upon the work of the United Nations over the past 75 years and
  • Discuss the opportunity to leverage innovations and new technologies, including those by young people, to help the region achieve the SDGs by 2030 and building a more inclusive, resilience and green “new normal”.
