The Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights presents its 20th Specialization Course in International Criminal Law for Young Penalists.
Since 1972, the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights has worked on international initiatives towards the advancement of human rights and rule of law in the world. Forty-nine years later, the Institute continues to be at the forefront of contemporary human rights research, capacity building, and advocacy. Furthermore, the Institute is particularly committed to the advancement and development of the next generation of human rights advocates through its specialization courses in legal doctrine and international criminal law.
One of the signature and most prominent activities the Siracusa Institute organizes is the ICL Course, hosted annually at the Institute’s headquarters in Siracusa. This year’s course will address “Human Rights, Criminal Justice, and International Law”, and, for the first time in its history, will take place online from July 5 until July 9, 2021.
The courses that have taken place in the past were attended by 1,055 young professionals cumulatively from 101 countries spanning five continents. The Course addresses young scholars from across the globe, including recent law graduates, practitioners, academics, and students, pursuing higher education or careers in the fields of international criminal law and international relations. Professor William A. Schabas, Professor of International Law at Middlesex University, chairs and coordinates the course, assuring the highest quality of education administered by some of the most erudite academics and researchers in the field of international criminal law. This year’s confirmed instructors include Aminata Touré, former Minister of Justice and former Prime Minister of Senegal, Rosario Aitala, Judge of the International Criminal Court, Fabián Salvioli, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the promotion of truth, justice, reparation, and guarantees of non-recurrence, and Paolo Pinto de Albuquerque, former Judge of the European Court of Human Rights
The Specialization Course will address the following topics:

• Fair Trial Guarantees and Rights of the Defence
• Investigation of International Crimes
• Sexual and Gender-Based Crimes and International Law
• History of International Criminal Law

• Human Rights, International Criminal Law and Armed Conflict
• Transitional Justice and Restorative Justice
and include small-group exercises aiming to stimulate interaction among participants.
The ICL course – which is organized in cooperation with the International Association of Penal Law (AIDP – France), the University of Palermo Department of Law (Italy), the Irish Centre for Human Rights, National University of Ireland (Galway, Ireland), and the Middlesex University Department of Law (London, UK), and with the support of the College for Criminal Law Science of Beijing Normal University (China) and Manríquez y Benavides Abogados Ltda (Chile) – has evolved into one of the Siracusa Institute’s most rewarding and successful events over the years.
