Gender mainstreaming is required in all peace actions in order to maintain peace and security in the world, said on Friday in New York Morocco’s permanent representative to the UN, ambassador Omar Hilale.

Women’s participation in the negotiation process increases the chances of a peaceful resolution of conflicts and the sustainability of peace and peace agreements, Hilale told a day-long debate in the Security Council on “women, peace and security”.

This, he said, was confirmed by a UN Women’s global survey in 2015, which showed that the presence of women in peace negotiations promotes the sustainability of peace agreements and that 35 % of agreements negotiated by women last more than 15 years. In this context, the diplomat noted that the Security Council resolution 1325 reaffirms women’s important role in the prevention and resolution of conflicts, peace negotiations and in post-conflict reconstruction.

This resolution is about integrating a gender perspective into multi-dimensional peace operations, including prevention, conflict resolution, and peacebuilding, Hilale added.

In this regard, he recalled that Morocco organized, on September, 2016, an International Conference on “Women, Peace and Security”, noting that this is a contribution to the debate on the role of women in peace processes and the implementation of national action plans to advance collective efforts towards the implementation of resolution 1325.

It was also an opportunity to renew the UN commitment and the consensus of the international community to strengthen women’s participation in conflict resolution and peacebuilding, he added, noting that several issues were discussed at this event, including the role of women in mediation processes and conflict prevention and the best practices in the prevention of sexual violence during conflicts.

At this conference, he said, Morocco announced the creation of a regional think thank on the role of women in peacekeeping operations and their contribution to achieving sustainable development.
