About the Funding Agency

Global Environment Facility

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) was founded on the eve of the Rio Earth Summit 30 years ago to address our planet's most critical environmental issues. The GEF is the world's largest multilateral trust fund dedicated to assisting developing countries to invest in nature and it promotes the implementation of major international environmental treaties.

The GEF awards funding for initiatives involving biodiversity, climate change, international waters, land degradation, the ozone layer, persistent organic pollutants, mercury, sustainable forest management, food security and sustainable cities. Thus far, the GEF has supported over 25,000 civil society and community initiatives in 135 countries through its Small Grants Program.

About the Sectors

Environment & Climate

Focuses on protecting natural ecosystems, promoting sustainable resource management, enhancing climate resilience, and mitigating the impacts of climate change through conservation, adaptation, and low-carbon initiatives.

Key areas:
  • Environmental protection and conservation
  • Natural resource and ecosystem management
  • Climate change and environmental resilience

Locations

Chile

Chile prioritizes highway concessions, port expansion, mining-related infrastructure, renewable energy projects, and urban transit systems. The country has a well-developed concession model attracting private investment in transport and utilities. Infrastructure investment supports copper exports, logistics integration, and energy diversification, particularly in solar and wind power. Financing combines public funds, pension-backed investment vehicles, and international capital markets. Regulatory stability has historically supported project continuity, though social and environmental considerations increasingly shape planning decisions.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica invests in road rehabilitation, port modernization, airport upgrades, and renewable energy infrastructure to support tourism, trade, and sustainability goals. The country generates most of its electricity from renewable sources, shaping future grid modernization efforts. Infrastructure financing combines public budgets, multilateral loans, and PPP frameworks. Bureaucratic processes and fiscal constraints affect project execution timelines. Climate resilience and environmental protection remain core planning principles.
