PR 015143 Kyrgyz Republic: Bishkek District Heating Modernisation - Project Feasibility Assessment

Objectives: The primary objective of the Bishkek District Heating Modernisation project is to support the Kyrgyz Republic through financing and consultancy in modernising and decarbonising the district heating infrastructure in Bishkek. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) aims to enhance and ensure operational efficiency while transitioning the system to incorporate renewable energy solutions such as centralised heat pumps, solar thermal systems, and e-boilers, alongside rehabilitating the existing network infrastructure. By replacing coal-fired generation equipment and modernising selected network components, the project strives to reduce fuel consumption, tackle legacy issues and advance towards a sustainable, resilient energy system. The EBRD, through this investment, is targeting a greener, more efficient district heating service that is in alignment with contemporary climate goals, enhances social inclusion, and supports local urban development strategies. A comprehensive feasibility assessment covering technical, environmental, social, and financial aspects of the proposed initiatives will set the foundation for success.
