Sustainable Natural Resources Management for Enhanced Food Security in Borana zone, Ethiopia
7F-09038
| CPV: | 98300000 - Miscellaneous services |
Background
Borana pastoralists are faced with different sets of complex problems that contributed to their increased vulnerability and food insecurity over the past two decades. This is mainly attributed to socio-economic, political and environmental factors. Land degradation mainly due to bush encroachment, overgrazing, soil erosion, population pressure, recur-rent drought, and the weakening of the traditional rangeland and/or land use manage-ment systems are among the key factors for the weakening of the pastoralists’ livelihood.
Objectives
Goal: The proposed contribution aims at improving (agro-) pastoralists’ food security and adaptive capacities through improving and strengthening natural resources management practices, governance system and pastoralist income diversification.
Outcomes:
1)Degraded rangelands are rehabilitated and improved through appropriate interventions
2)Vulnerable pastoralists (particularly women) enjoy increased access and control over key natural resources through more representation in customary and local government institutions.
3)Pastoralist women increase their income and diversify their livelihoods through natural resources-based cooperatives.
4)Selected government institutions and NGOs coordination and harmonization platforms vis-à-vis NRM is strengthened to ensure sharing of lessons and best practices among relevant actors.
5)Selected government institutions enhanced their knowledge management systems vis-à-vis NRM to properly document and scale up best practices.
