Description

Introduction

Human Appeal Associates (HAA) and Legal Aid and Human Rights Organisation (LAHRO) invite international partners to join the transformative initiative “Building Skills & Creating Opportunities”. This vocational and livelihood development program targets 350 disadvantaged youth aged 15–30, including juveniles in detention, young mothers with infants, and vulnerable young women and men at Juba Central Prison.

The Challenge

South Sudan’s youth face urgent and systemic challenges:

  • Overcrowded detention facilities with limited rehabilitation programs.
  • High unemployment and lack of market-relevant skills.
  • Gender-based barriers restricting young women’s participation in economic activities.
  • Fragile economy dominated by informal trade and services.

Without intervention, these conditions perpetuate cycles of poverty, marginalization, and recidivism, undermining peace and development.

The Initiative

This 12-month program, supported by partners, delivers:

  • Vocational Training in trades such as mobile/computer repair, plumbing, cooking, hairdressing, beadwork, soap/shampoo production, cheese making, driving, and basic IT.
  • Internships & Micro-Enterprise Support to provide real-world experience and income generation.
  • Psychosocial Assistance & Mentorship to foster reintegration, resilience, and personal growth.
  • Gender Inclusion by empowering young mothers and women with livelihood tools and childcare support.

HAA’s proven vocational model has already achieved a 70% employment/self-employment rate among graduates, demonstrating strong community impact and sustainability.

Partnership Goals

We seek partners to:

  • Expand geographic reach and program scale.
  • Integrate child protection and safeguarding frameworks.
  • Strengthen monitoring, evaluation, and learning systems.
  • Mobilize technical expertise and financial resources.
  • Support franchise-based training models for long-term sustainability.

Why Partner with Us

  • Proven Impact: In January 2023, the consortium facilitated the release of 36 inmates from Juba Central Prison, improving prison conditions and promoting humane treatment.
  • Integrated Approach: Combining humanitarian relief, legal advocacy, and vocational training.
  • Strategic Alignment: Fully aligned with national priorities and international human rights standards.
  • Scalable Model: Designed to train 500,000 youth by 2030, with 70% expected to secure employment or self-employment within six months of graduation.

Call to Action

We invite global partners, donors, and stakeholders to co-design and fund this scalable model for youth rehabilitation and livelihood development. Together, we can transform lives, reduce recidivism, and strengthen communities across South Sudan.
