Description

Caritas Indonesia was legally established on May 17, 2006, acting as a humanitarian foundation belonging to KWI (Indonesian Bishops Conference). This foundation became the central body of coordination, facilitation and animation of the Catholic Church in Indonesia in carrying out humanitarian missions, especially to help victims of natural disasters and disasters caused by human actions. In addition, KARINA carries out a humanitarian mission on issues of human rights violations, social conflicts and violence, inter-religious dialogue in humanitarian action, gender injustice and various acts of social injustice.

As a first step in strengthening KARINA's position as a humanitarian institution of the Catholic Church in Indonesia, in July 2006 was the First National Consultation attended by 37 Dioceses. The consultation was also attended by representatives from Caritas Internastionalis and several Caritas members from other countries. This National Consultation is an important milestone inaugurated KARINA - Caritas Nasional in Indonesia.

Since its establishment, KARINA has been involved in many humanitarian fields such as emergency response actions, disaster risk reduction activities, community resilience development, and capacity building for diocesan social institutions, as collaborative partners and project implementing agencies. Through collaboration with the Caritas / social organization of the Catholic Church of the Diocese, KARINA is present in 37 dioceses (ecclesiastical regions) throughout Indonesia, especially in the social-humanitarian field.
