The Sebou 1963-1968 project identified, in the Gharb plain, a potential of 250,000 ha of land suitable for large-scale irrigation. The area currently equipped is about 114,000 ha distributed as follows: gravity (94,000 ha), sprinkling (20,000 ha), submersion (12,000 ha) and low pressure with gravity irrigation on the plot (3,000 ha). The Gharb perimeter is set up in hydraulically independent collective sectors whose size has been optimized during the development operation at around 3,000 ha for electricity consumption considerations.
The main objectives sought through the development are:
Exploitation of water resources mobilized by dams upstream of the plain;
the valuation of these water resources through appropriate and specific development;
drainage (subterranean and superficial) of agricultural land that enhances development conditions. In a rainy year, it plays an important role in the evacuation of excess water.
In addition, and in the framework of the transversal actions of the Plan Maroc Vert, the RAP provides for the extension of irrigation on the one hand and the water saving on irrigation on the other hand.
Irrigation Extension Program (PEI):
The installation of the El Wahda dam, commissioned in 1997, planned to irrigate 110,000 ha of the Third Gharb Development Area (TTI). Thus, future developments will concern the extension of irrigation over an area of about 120 000 ha.
