Enugu State is in the South East geopolitical Zone of Nigeria that shares a border Abia and Imo to the south, Ebonyi to the east, Benue to the north-east, Kogi to the north-west and Anambra State to the west. It covers an area of 7,161 square km (2,765 sq mi) and ranks 29th out of the 36 States of Nigeria in terms of land area.
Enugu State, sometimes known as the Coal-City State or Wawa State, was established by military decree in 1991 and draws its name from Enugu, the capital city, whose popularity came as a result of it being the first location in Nigeria where commercial quantities of coal were extracted in 1909.
The economy of the state is based on the public sector and therefore the State Government continues to be the largest single employer of labor. In 2015, the Rockefeller Foundation ranked Enugu State as the 65th most resilient city on the planet.
