Description
The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources (MLNR) of Ghana is responsible for the sustainable utilization of national lands, forests, wildlife resources and mineral resources.
The MLNR was created in 1993, under Section 11 of the Civil Service Law and its main mission is to properly manage natural resources through effective policy formulation, market regulation and asset management in order to create socio-economic development.
The Ministry is organized into three sub-sectors, Forestry, Land and Mining each of which is divided into specialized departments that analyse and develop policies in their specific area of expertise.
MLNR principally formulates, coordinates and monitors policies and projects with certain departments being responsible for this such as the Lands Commission, the Office of the Administration of Stool Lands, the Forestry Commission, the Minerals Commission, the Geological Survey Department, the Precious Minerals Marketing Company Limited, the Ghana Boundary Commission, the National Forest Plantation Fund Board and the Minerals Development Fund Board.
Currently, the Ministry plans to address issues such as the conservation of marine areas and forests, reducing coastal erosion and improving pollution. MLRN has four ongoing projects which are the Land Administration Project, the Natural Resource Management Program, the National Forest Plantation Development Program and the Wildlife Division Support Project.
