Description

ituated in the vibrant economic center of Hong Kong, the U.S. Consulate General serves both the Hong Kong and Macau consular districts. The United States has had a consular presence in Hong Kong since 1843 and the current Consulate General has been at its location on Garden Road since the late 1950s. The Consulate General in Hong Kong includes Consular, Political, Economic, Public Affairs, Agriculture, and Foreign Commercial offices as well as representation from U.S. law enforcement agencies.

The U.S. Consulate General serves the needs of the many U.S. visitors to and residents in Hong Kong and Macau and promotes the diplomatic goals of the United States government in the two Special Administrative Regions (SARs). Hong Kong plays a unique role as a financial gateway to Mainland China and is home to close to 1,400 subsidiaries of U.S. companies, many of which serve as the regional headquarters or office. Hong Kong is among the largest U.S. export markets for goods and agricultural products, and the United States is one of the top foreign investors in Macau. The U.S. Consulate also supports educational, cultural, and professional exchanges between the United States and both SARs.

United States policy toward Hong Kong and Macau is grounded in the U.S.-Hong Kong Policy Act of 1992 and the U.S.-Macau Policy Act of 1999, respectively. Please see Official Reports for more information. Due to the unique status of the Hong Kong and Macau SARs under the “one country, two systems” frameworks, U.S. Consulate General Hong Kong and Macau reports directly to the State Department in Washington, D.C.
