Since the inception of the department in 1965,it has come a long way in providing better health care facilities to the people of the state. With the launching of NHRM in the state in 2006,t he department is endeavoring to fill in the critical gaps through appointment of additional manpower such as doctors, nurses, paramedics as well as support in terms of up gradation of health units. NHM has also integrated the existing programs of health and family welfare department along with other national programs. The health situation has considerably improved as reflected by Infant Mortality Rate at 12 per 1000 live birth in comparison to National status at 58, while Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) is 168 per 1 lakh live birth as compared to National status at 42.
During the years the department has notified 109 (one hundred and nine) sub-centres and 8 (eight) existing sub-centres were upgraded to Primary Health centres (PHC’s) in 2015-16 and 2016-17 to provide proper medical facilities in the rural areas. The overall public health infrastructure in the state has increased to 11 district hospitals,2 TB & Chest disease hospitals,1 State Mental Health Institute,21 CHC’s, 135 PHC’s, 1 SHC, 511 Sub-Centre and 2 big dispensaries.
The present set up of the department is headed by a cabinet minister and commissioner & Secretary to the govt. of Nagaland at the state level and a principal Director with 2 (two) Directors in the Directorate level.
