Ministry of Petroleum and Mining (MOPM) is a government body established in 2018 in Nairobi, Kenya whose function is to provide leadership in the management of the extractive sector in Kenya.
MOPM is divided into two state departments, the State Department of Petroleum and the State Department of Mining. The main activities attributed to MOPM include the development of legal policies for petroleum and mining and the creation of an enabling investment climate and capacity building for effective program/project management. Its primary mission is to increase the commercialization of extractive discoveries, develop the necessary skills and infrastructure for the extraction of oil, gas and other minerals and improve access to a competitive, reliable and secure supply of petroleum products. The Ministry coordinates the import of petroleum products together with oil marketing companies through a process named the Open Tender System. The National Oil Corporation of Kenya (NOCK) is the state body responsible for this area. The Kenya Pipeline Company provides the infrastructure for the movement of products including storage and transportation services for petroleum products.
