The United States and Liberia have a rich relationship that extends back over two centuries. In 1864, the United States established the American Legation in Liberia after officially recognizing the Republic of Liberia in 1862 which was upgraded to the status of Embassy in 1949 and subsequently during the Cold War, the two nations had very strong ties.
Liberia now considers the United States the most steadfast ally in its democratic and rebuilding endeavors. Since the end of Liberia's civil war in 2003, the US has provided over US$1 billion in bilateral aid and over US$1 billion in assessed contributions to the UN Mission in Liberia.
