Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), sometimes known as the Abohawa Office (Weather Office), is the country's national meteorological institution, operating under the Bangladeshi government’s Ministry of Defense.
It manages Bangladesh's network of surface and upper air observatories, radar and satellite stations, agrometeorological, geomagnetic and seismological observatories and meteorological telecommunication systems.
The role of BMD is to provide effective meteorological and seismological services for the protection of life, property and the environment, increased safety on land, sea and air, improved quality of life and enable long-term economic growth. The BMD also monitors conditions and issues forecasts and warnings of extreme meteorological phenomena and provides rainfall data and seismological information in and around the nation.
