The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) was established in 1986 to promote and regulate inland waterways for shipping and transportation.
As a subsidy of the Ministry of Shipping, the Authority primarily performs projects for the development and support of IWT infrastructure on national waterways.
Its headquarters are in Noida and it has regional offices in Patna, Kolkata, Guwahati and Kochi as well as sub-offices in Allahabad, Varanasi, Farakka, Sahibganj, Haldia, Swroopganj, Hemnagar, Dibrugarh, Dhubri, Silchar, Kollam, Bhubaneshwar and Vijayawada.
