The capital of the Brazilian state of Piauí is Teresina which is located in the Center-North of the State, about 366 km from the coast. The city extends to 1,392 sq. km and has a population of 830,000. Teresina was given this nickname of Cidade Verde by the writer, Coelho Neto, because of its tree-lined streets and avenues. The city model, characteristic of the colonial period, resembles a checkerboard, which facilitates ease of movement.
The capital excels in the service sector and thus draws thousands of people seeking modern medical treatments as well as finding some of the best specialists in the country. Another booming industry is education.
Teresina has two distinct seasons due to its semi-humid tropical climate and high temperatures: the wet season which occurs in summer and fall and the dry season which occurs in winter and spring.
The Environmental Park of the Encounter of Waters, located in the city's northern zone, is one of the city's most popular tourist destinations where the Parnaba and Poti rivers merge before flowing to the Atlantic Ocean. Besides the Environmental Park, Teresina offers various tourist attractions including the João Luís Ferreira Metallic Bridge, the São Benedito Church, the Piauí Museum, the Dom Paulo Libório Museum of Sacred Art, João Isidoro França, Theatro 4 de Setembro, Pedro II Square, the Craft Center Mestre Dezinho and Parque Lagoas do Norte.
